Lines in the Sand

Lima, the capital of Peru, has been a magnet for migration since the early 1900s. The city has expanded from half a million inhabitants in 1940 to over 8.5 million today. Given the shortage of land, and in the absence of urban planning, migrants are forced to settle in the surrounding desert. Violent conflict over land ownership is common. White pebble lines demarcate new housing plots in this inhospitable landscape. The lines represent both the hopes and struggles in this ongoing process of human settlement.
