María works at the Macdesa gold mine in southern Peru as a "Pallaquera" sorting and searching for gold amongst discarded rocks. The video was produced with British filmmaker Matt Collett to tell the story of "a day in the life" of a Pallaquera. With the support of NGOs such as Solidaridad, the mine has been certified as Fair-trade. This has led to many improvements in the safety conditions for workers as well as the environmental standards at this small-scale mine.
